Developing a Leadership Philosophy Essay -- Developing a Philosophy of

Developing a Leadership Philosophy It is very telling that one of our last activities focuses on reflection and communication. It is telling because these are the two characteristics emphasized throughout each of my leadership classes. Reflection deals with a leader’s ability to internalize learning. Communication incorporates a leader’s ability to develop relationships and influence them effectively. I firmly believe both characteristics are the keys to effective leadership. A number of experts concur believing that a leader must start with knowledge of oneself and develop that into an ability to communicate, share ideas, visions, and listen to others. KNOWING ONESELF Bolman and Deal (1994) summarize management and leadership as follows, â€Å"management provides consistency, control, and efficiency. But leadership is needed to foster purpose, passion, and imagination† (p.77). Fullan (2001) points to the Bolman and Deal description of leadership and focuses on the fostering of purpose. Fullan (2001) agrees with Sergiovanni’s thoughts that, â€Å"authentic leaders anchor their practice in ideas, values, and commitments, exhibit distinctive qualities of style and substance, and can be trusted to be morally diligent in advancing the enterprises lead† (p.14). Fullan (2001) posits that the moral purpose of a leader and the success of an organization are synonymous. FINDING A MORAL COMPASS Where does a leader find his/her moral purpose? Bolman and Deal (2001) write that a leader must â€Å"lead from something deep in [his/her] heart† (p.23). For me, my moral purpose/compass is deeply rooted in my Christian faith. I have a firm belief in what is right and wrong, ethical and unethical. These concepts are not ambiguous for me. I have resour... ...pose to elevate others, to give what one has to help others realize their potential, grow, and achieve their goals. Works Cited Bolman, L.G. & Deal, T.E. (1994). Upper canopy tree cover in cocoa agroforestry system

Climate Change is one aspect or explanation of how the livelihood of farmers can be threatened. (Cocklebur, 2012) In Ghana, the climate has changed over the last years of which crops are getting destroyed due to periods of extreme heat and heavy rains. As Mambo and colleagues outline in their paper, climate change mitigation in Africa to date has largely focused on reforestation and forest protection. This has often conflicted with the need to expand agricultural production to feed the continent's growing population. But this need not be the case, says Mambo, as exaggerators may be able to deliver both on increasing tree cover to store carbon while also enhancing agricultural productivity. Cocoa cultivation maintains a higher proportions of upper canopy crown cover (cocoa exaggerators) which is increasingly being viewed as a sustainable land use practice that is environmentally preferable to other forms of agricultural activities in tropical forest regions because it contributes to bi odiversity conservation and income diversification.Properly managed cocoa exaggerators systems play a crucial role in helping farmers adapt and build resilience to uncertain climates. (Langford, 2014). Upper canopy trees can provide a buffer against climatic extremes that impact crop growth. They can enhance understood growth and improve water use efficiency. These trees have also been shown to increase rainfall utilization compared to annual cropping systems. And are known to have a direct impact on local and regional rainfall patterns, so they also have considerable potential to alleviate drought in parts of Africa. Mambo et. Al, 2014). The use of production landscapes in Ghana for cocoa reduction has intensified dramatically over the last three decades. (UNDO, 2014). This research will examine the evolution of the cocoa sector in Ghana primarily to understand the factors that have contributed to the success of the use of upper canopy crown cover and to look for lessons for foster ing agricultural transformation. The relatively dense forest that characterized the initial cultivation of cocoa in Ghana maintained the natural ecosystem suitable for cocoa growth. The District Administrative capital Jabots is located km to the north-west of Seconds Dictator Metropolitan, the regional capital and a distance of km from Kumara, the Shanty regional capital. The District shares borders with Bib and Sauna's North Municipal in the North, Sauna's South and Body District to the east, Seaman District to the south and La Cote divorce to the west. 1. . 2 Materials Materials needed for this study will include the following; Measuring tape; for measuring the length of trees, branches and crowns.Densitometers; for measuring of the diameters of trees and branches. Hypocrites for measuring tree height Releasers ; to determine the upper diameter of big trees Calipers, either wooden beam or finish parabolic will be used to measure tree diameters when the diameters are not over CACM. Compass; to check directions of NSA and EWE. Sampling intensity This study will be conducted in 12 cocoa farms in the vicinity of Bib district. These farms will be selected purposely base on the maturity of the cocoa exaggerators system practiced. The spread of that line is horizontal distance between those two positions. On steeply sloping ground (>1 5 degrees) the taped distance between the two points can be corrected to a true horizontal by using basic trigonometry. Horizontal distance = coos (inclination) x slope distance. The area of the crown may be estimated employing the assumption that is equivalent to the area off circle defined by an average crown diameter. The linear ape will be used to measure the length of crown margin in the direction of NSA, and EWE.The average may be obtained using arithmetic mean of the maximum and minimum crown diameter. These equations will be used in determining the crown surface area and volume; Crown surface area; L/2 Crown volume; 2 hoc / 12 W here d = diameter at the base of the crown (m), hoc = crown depth (m), and L= length of crown margin (m). DATA ANALYSIS Data acquired from the sampling intensity will be analyzed using analytical software, GENERATE (VS. international version 2011). Species composition and crown diameters f trees will be compared using the analysis of variance and statistical test.

Bartleby and Berino Corene. The Employer’s problem Essay

Bartleby and Berino Corene. The Employer’s problem Introduction Bartleby is about a lawyer who is overwhelmed by workload at his office to the extent that he needs an extra hand with writings thus calling for the need to post an advertisement for a scrivener. Lucky for him, he lands the resolute Bartleby who undertakes his duties at the office diligently to the admiration of the lawyer who lauds his good work unlike his two other scriveners: Turkey and Nippers. These two are the lawyers first headache at the workplace, Turkey for one, cannot work during the afternoons due to his old age but is strongly against his boss laying him off the job in the afternoons thus prompting the lawyer to delegate to him less serious documents for copying in the afternoon. Nippers on the other hand though of young age, has a temper and a stomach problem. Additional to that, he can only perform his duties in the afternoon when he is calmer and relaxed CITATION Mel90 p 7 l 1033 (Melville 7). Upon arrival at the office, Bartleby proves the opposite of the two as he w orks from morning to evening a thing that impresses the lawyer who sees for sure he had actually struck gold with this new scrivener but little does he know trouble is brewing for him in the future. Bartleby is a sheep ion a wolf’s skin; all his good work suddenly turns to total non-performance one single day when the lawyer is overwhelmed with duties at his office and calls upon him to assist with copying some of the documents causing a backlog at the office but he declines. Irrespective of the lawyer’s need for a helping hand, he feels obliged to Bartleby’s request of, â€Å"I would prefer not to† as being utterly genuine and being said in a polite and respectful manner that he lets it pass for the first time CITATION Mel90 p 14 l 1033 (Melville 14). Little does he know he was laying the bed for more trouble to come in future tasks that Bartleby is called upon to undertake. â€Å"I prefer not to,† becomes Bartleby’s infamous mantra at the workplace when he is called upon to undertake any take called upon him by his employer and surprisingly enough the lawyer finds it very hard to reprimand this new weird behavior. In real sense, under any working setting, it is not the duty of the employee to decide on what tasks he/she should do and what they should not do; it is their duty to undertake all duties delegated to them assiduously. How politely and calmly Bartleby delivers his request for not undertaking any new tasks lea ves the lawyer perplexed on whether he really should be asking Bartleby to undertake a specified task. However, this becomes overbearing when Bartleby reports to him that he would not be doing any more writings. Bartleby’s actions prompts the lawyer to clear his wage balances and ask him to leave. Nonetheless, after clearance with his employer, Bartleby sticks around the workplace and makes it his home. It is problem to the lawyer for despite having terminated Bartleby’s contract, he sticks around at the workplace and to make matters worse transforms the workplace to his sleeping quarters. This comes to the lawyer’s attention one Sunday morning when he cannot fit his key into the door only for the door to be opened by Bartleby who politely asks him to return after a few minutes and he surprisingly finds himself abiding to the request. The lawyer believes that he is undertaking a noble cause by allowing Bartleby to stick around the office doing nothing but soon this behavior turns out to be a nuisance to the business and an eye sore to the coming and going customers thus prompting him to move his business to a new location considering the fact that Bartleby would ever leave irrespective of what actions are taken against him or how much he is coerced to do so CITAT ION Mel90 p 42 l 1033 (Melville 42). Contrary to his expectation that by moving out he would have solved the Bartleby menace, he is accosted by a new tenant of the old building and by the police who leave Bartleby under his care. Bartleby continues his stubborn and withdrawal behavior to the extent that he refuses an offer of staying with the lawyer and later is taken to prison on vagrantly charges. Irrespective of the lawyers constant concern of trying to keep an eye on him while in prison, Bartleby refuses to take food offered to him while in prison resorts to sleeping under a tree at the prison yard where he meets hi final demise. In reality, the lawyer had tried all in his power to help a depressed Bartleby and he hand turned down the helping hand, it left the lawyer wondering if Bartleby’s previous employer’s: the Dead Letters had anything to do with his withdrawn lifestyle. He is transfixed to the disturbing connection in the conclusion of his narration describes it as, â€Å"Dead letters! Doe it no t sound like dead men†¦. Sometimes from out the folder paper the pale clerk takes a ring—the finger it was meant for, perhaps, molders in the grave; a bank- note sent in swiftest charity—he whom it would relieve, nor eats nor hungers any more†¦on errands of life, these letters speed to death. Ah, Bartleby! Ah, humanity†¦CITATION Mel90 p 55 l 1033 (Melville 55)† Different handling of Bartleby’s case In reality, there is no better way how the lawyer could have handled Bartleby’s case for he just instantly transformed from being a hardworking individual to a lousy self-reserved introvert. Perhaps, one precaution that the lawyer should have undertaken before hiring Bartleby, would have been to perform a background check on his previous employment history or enquired directly form Bartleby himself his lifestyle/family background. There is no single place in the narration where we are told that the lawyer assessed the above competences from a recruit once he placed an advertisement out, he seemed too eager to sort out his firm issues that were at hand risking oblivion to other factors that affect the normal functioning of the business. Similarly, the same can be said about his lenient stance towards accommodating Bartleby’s ill behaviors even when they directly affected his business. It shall be argued that his morals came first when it came to handling issues purportin g to Bartleby, nut what he should really done is instilled the real ideology of responsibility onto his employee as opposed to trying to find a solution to all his problems. There is this one specific stance in the narration that puts o question the lawyers helping hand, he himself noticed Bartleby’s miserable stat of life and withdrawal symptoms, why not sign him into a mental facility to get professional assistance as opposed to turning him into a mooch and accommodating his ill mannerisms. Meiji Restoration - Japan essays

Meiji Restoration - Japan essays The Meiji Restoration was period in Japan when massive changes in ancient Japan. The goal of the Meiji Restoration was summarized in their motto, A rich country, a strong military. In their quest to do so, the Meiji looked to the western civilizations. The Meiji sent young men to study abroad and learn new traits from the west. Before this drastic move the traditional Japanese society was largely isolated from all other civilizations. By doing this the Japanese managed to strengthen the economy, strengthen the government, and make social reforms. Meiji leaders made the economy a major priority. They encouraged Japans business class to adopt western methods. They Japanese built railroads to allow the shipment of goods and transportation of people, a banking system to aid in the expansion of businesses and investors, improved ports to aid in the expansion of trade with other countries, and also organized a telegraph and postal system which enables the spread of news quickly. Another goal of the Meiji was to strengthen the government and make it a strong central power, equal to those of the western powers. In 1889 they adapted the German for of government. It set forth principles that all citizens were equal before the law. Like the German system, however, it gave the ruler autocratic power. A legislature, or diet, was formed, made up of one elected house and one house appointed to the emperor. But its power was extremely limited. Japan then established a western style bureaucracy with separate departments to supervise finance, the army, the navy, and education. Meiji made social reforms to help appease the people and advance their society. The constitution ended legal distinctions between classes, thus freeing people to build the nation. The government set up new schools and universities and hired westerners to teach the new generation modern technology. The reform of the Japanese family system became the top ...

Can a President Pardon Himself - Constitution and Laws

Can a President Pardon Himself - Constitution and Laws The question of whether a president can pardon himself arose during the 2016 presidential campaign when critics of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton suggested she could face criminal prosecution or impeachment over her use of a private email server as secretary of the Department of State if she were to be elected. The topic also surfaced during the tumultuous presidency of Donald Trump, particularly after it was reported that the erratic businessman and former reality-television star and his lawyers  were discussing the president’s authority to grant pardons and that Trump was asking his advisers about his power to pardon aides, family members and even himself. Trump further stoked speculation that he was considering his power to pardon himself amid the ongoing probes over his campaigns connections with Russia when he tweeted all agree the U.S. President has the complete power to pardon.† Whether a president has the power to pardon himself, though, is unclear and the subject of much debate among constitutional scholars. The first thing you should know is this: No president in the history of the United States has ever pardoned himself. The Power to Pardon in the Constitution Presidents are granted the authority to issue pardons in Article II, Section 2, Clause 1 of the U.S. Constitution.   The clause reads: The President ... shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment. Take note of two key phrases in that clause. The first keyphrase limits the use of pardons for offenses against the United States. The second key phrase states that a president cant issue a pardon in cases of impeachment. Those two caveats in the Constitution place some limitations on the presidents power to pardon. The bottom line is that if a president commits a high crime or misdemeanor and is impeached, he cant pardon himself. He also cannot pardon himself in private civil and state criminal cases. His authority extends only to federal charges. Take note of the word grant. Typically, the word means one person gives something to another. Under that meaning, a president can give someone else a pardon, but not himself. Yes, the President Can Pardon Himself Some scholars argue that the president can pardon himself in some circumstances because - and this is a key point - the Constitution does not explicitly prohibit it. That is considered by some to be the strongest argument that a president has the authority to pardon himself. In 1974, as President Richard M. Nixon was facing certain impeachment, he explored the idea of issuing a pardon to himself and then resigning. Nixons lawyers prepared a memo stating such a move would be legal. The president decided against a pardon, which would have been politically disastrous, but resigned anyway. He was later pardoned by President Gerald Ford. Although I respected the tenet that no man should be above the law, public policy demanded that I put Nixon-and Watergate-behind us as quickly as possible, Ford said. In addition, the U.S Supreme Court has ruled that a president can issue pardon even before charges have been filed. The high court stated that pardon power â€Å"extends to every offense known to the law, and may be exercised at any time after its commission, either before legal proceedings are taken or during their pendency, or after conviction and judgment.† No, the President Cant Pardon Himself Most scholars argue, however, that presidents cannot pardon themselves. More to the point, even if they were, such a move would be incredibly risky and likely to ignite a constitutional crisis in the United States. Jonathan Turley,  a professor of public interest law at George Washington University, wrote in The Washington Post: Such an act would make the White House look like the Bada Bing Club. After a self-pardon, Trump could wipe out the Islamic State, trigger an economic golden age and solve global warming with a carbon-eating border wall - and no one would notice. He would simply go down in history as the man who not only pardoned his family members but himself. Michigan State University law professor Brian C. Kalt, writing in his 1997 paper Pardon Me: The Constitutional Case Against Presidential Self-Pardons, stated that a presidential self-pardon would not hold up in court. An attempted self-pardon would likely undermine the publics confidence in the presidency and the Constitution. A potential meltdown of such magnitude would be no time to begin legalistic discussion; the political facts of the moment would distort our considered legal judgment. Looking at the question from a cooler vantage point, the intent of the Framers, the words and themes of the Constitution they created, and the wisdom of the judges that have interpreted it all point to the same conclusion: Presidents cannot pardon themselves. The courts would likely follow the principle  stated by James Madison in the Federalist Papers. No man, Madison wrote, is allowed to be a judge in his own cause, because his interest would certainly bias his judgment, and, not improbably, corrupt his integrity.

The image of the airplane passes through many other objects that do not seem to relate to it at all in terms of context but include the girl, what appears to be an advertisement for spaghetti and then an explosive cloud.
